Plan now for later irrigation needs

Although many Mississippi gardeners are wondering if it will ever quit raining and let their landscapes dry out a bit, now is actually a good time to think ahead to the inevitable hot and dry weather of summer.

Dry conditions create problems for our home gardens and landscapes, and gardeners water their lawns and landscape beds a lot more than usual during these times.

We typically water garden plants based on soil moisture, and when the soil feels dry, we water thoroughly. A common recommendation is to apply 1 to 1.5 inches of water a week. This irrigation is usually done with overhead sprinklers, but they are an inefficient method of applying water.

Hogan to receive honary degree from Brown University

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - Tougaloo College President Beverly Wade Hogan will be at Brown University this holiday weekend. Saturday afternoon, she will deliver the 2013 Baccalaureate address in the Meeting House of the First Baptist Church in America.

Sunday, at graduation ceremonies, Hogan will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the University.

More Boyd Elementary sexual assault allegations

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now)- Thursday we first told you about two parents of Boyd Elementary school students, who say their children were sexually assaulted by another student. The parents were furious that no action had been taken on their cases. Today more parents are speaking out about their children also falling victims.

Kimberly Davenport says her daughter was sexually assaulted in the same way by the same Boyd Elementary 5th grader.

"She stuck her hands in her pants and wiped it on my daughter," said Davenport.

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) - The New Stage Theatre will present Hairspray starting Tuesday.

Performances are set for May 28-June 1 and June 5-8 at 7:30 p.m. Matinees are scheduled for 2 p.m. June 2 and 9.

Traffic Alert: Old Canton Road & Crane Blvd.

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now)- The City of Jackson Department of Public Works has closed Old Canton Road at Crane Blvd for emergency sewer repair. The repairs are expected to take two weeks.

If you travel Old Canton Road between State Street and Meadowbrook Road, this will probably affect you.

Motorists are urged to observe all traffic control devices, and detour signs have been posted.

Mississippi relief agencies on standby for OK recovery

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now)- For relief agencies and groups across the state, the tornado that ripped through Oklahoma has put them on notice.

"All the fuel tanks are topped off. The trucks are loaded and when and if we get the call, we'll be prepared to go in a matter of hours," said William Perkins with the Mississippi Baptist Convention.

Perkins says he does expect that call to happen given the amount of damage and expected recovery time.

Man found shot in head in Jackson house IDed

Jackson police have released the identity of the man found dead in a west Jackson house Monday morning.

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now)- Jackson police have released the identity of the man found dead in a west Jackson house Monday morning.

According to Officer Colendula Green with JPD, R.B. Ervin was found shot in the head at a residence at 1133 Arbor Vista Boulevard. The death is being investigated as a homicide.

Green says police received a call about an abandoned vehicle on Denver Street around 11 a.m. The tag was traced to the Arbor Vista Boulevard residence, and relatives explained to police they had been trying to locate the individual.
